Women's Soccer Off To Fast Start In Spring Games.
April 19, 2007
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - What a difference a spring makes.
Head coach Brian Pensky and his women's soccer team have won their first five games of the spring season - yielding just one goal during that time.
Having trained since the beginning of February, the Terps finally had the
opportunity to compete against someone other than themselves when they hosted
American on April 3. Freshman
Emily Maynard's two
second-half goals, off assists
from
Nataly Arias and
Kelly Rozumalski,
paved the way to a 2-1 victory.
Ten days later, at the 11th Annual Kicks Against Breast Tournament in Germantown, Md., a pair of header goals from Rozumalski and Sarah Sample led the Terps to 1-0 victories over George Mason and Syracuse, respectively. Both goals came off corner kicks from Kaila Sciacia.
In the Terps most recent game, Maryland defeated Georgetown 2-0 behind two goals from freshman Maureen Dowling. Dowling's goals were assisted by Nataly Arias, Molly Dreska and Lauren Gamble.
This past Sunday, April 22, at Navy Dowling's tackle won back possession for the Terps and she quickly slotted a pass to Rozumalski, whose first touch put her behind the Navy defense. She then easily put away the first and only goal of the game in the 65th minute as Maryland defeated the Midshipmen 1-0.
EPPING, N.H. -- In their first outdoor 11 side match in over a month, the
UMass Women's Soccer team ventured to Epping, N.H. site of SeaCoast United's
field turf complex on Sunday, April 22. UMass fared quite well, tying New
Hampshire 2-2 and then defeating St. Anselm's 3-1.
Lack of defensive organization led to an early 8th minute New Hampshire lead. Thereafter, UMass got its game rolling and dominated large portions of the game. It took until the second half however to get on the board.
Seven minutes in, the Minutewomen tied it up. After three strong air challenges by Amy Ballew(2) and Vanessa Patry, Britt Canfield hit a stunner that deflected off Patry and past the helpless UNH keeper. 11 minutes later, UMass scored again. Left wing Katie Ruggles put left defender Kaelyn through into UNH's penalty area. Caldwell's bomb was deflected into a crowd where Patry finished once more.
Four minutes from time the never give up Wildcats scored the equalizer off a long ball that bounced off two UMass defenders to an opportunistic UNH forward who make no mistake in finishing. Goalkeeper Kristin Walker had a nice touchover save in the last minute.
Final score : UMASS 2 UNH 2

Terps Win, 1-0, At George Mason On Rozumalski Goal
Sept. 17, 2006
FAIRFAX, Va. - Junior forward Kelly Rozumalski scored her second goal of the season in the 67th minute of play to give the University of Maryland women's soccer team a 1-0 victory at George Mason Sunday night at George Mason Stadium.
"I'm
proud of our team," said Maryland head coach
Brian Pensky. "They've
bounced ba
ck
this weekend from two 1-0 losses. George Mason fought hard tonight, and made us
earn
every ounce of this victory. This is a great way to finish our non-conference
schedule. We
are excited to start ACC play with Clemson this Thursday and having to battle
for 90
minutes tonight will help our team growth heading into conference play."
After a scoreless first half, it was the Patriots who came out the aggressors in the second half. But senior goalkeeper Nikki Resnick made three of her five saves in the first 15 minutes of the second half to keep the game tied at 0-0.
The Terps survived the pressure of Mason and countered in the 67th minute with Rozumalski's goal. The scoring opportunity started with freshman midfielder Molly Dreska. She crossed the ball to the far post where senior midfielder Sarah Sample flicked a header back to the front of the goal where a streaking Rozumalski finished it from three yards out for the score.
"All three players on the goal deserve credit," said Pensky. "Molly served a terrific ball. Sarah did well on the back post to put the ball back across the face of the goal, and Roz did well to finish her chance."
Maryland continued to put pressure on the Patriots, firing three shots in the next nine minutes, but could not put another goal on the board. That was partly due to Mason goalkeeper Kasey Davenport, who finished the game with eight saves.
Rozumalski nearly picked up her second goal of the evening in the 85th minute, but her shot struck the crossbar.
The victory is the second in a row for the Terps (4-3-1)
and is their fourth of the season. All four wins have come
via shutout.
Labuda, Beam and Callahan Score In 49ers 3-2 Win At College of Charleston
The 49ers three goals were the most goals scored on the road by the team since scoring three goals at Xavier last season
Sept. 22, 2006
Mt. Pleasant, SC - Junior Nikki Labuda and freshmen Hailey Beam and Jen Callahan scored first half goals as the 49ers posted a 3-2 road victory over the College of Charleston. With the win, the 49ers improved to 4-3-2 on the season.
"We played the best first half of soccer
that we have all season tonight," Charlotte coach
Jon Lipsitz said.
"However, you have to give
College of Charleston credit they really put a lot of pressure on us in the
second half. We did not handle their pressue very well for the first 25 minutes
of the second half. We have got to learn to handle pressure from our opposition
better. But we regrouped and played pretty good soccer over the final 20 minutes
of the game."
The 49ers took a 1-0 lead when Labuda beat four Charleston defenders and blasted a shot into the goal from 18 yards out at the 28:36 mark of the match.
Beam made the score, 2-0, when she intercepted a pass from a Charleston defender and blasted the ball into the upper corner of the goal at the 33:55 mark. Beam's goal was her team-leading third of the season.
Callahan scored her first career goal when she recovered a ball that was cleared out of the box by a Charleston defender after a Charlotte corner kick. She then blasted the ball into the back of the net at the 41:24 mark.
Charleston got on the scoreboard when Kelly McGinty scored off a Chrissy Caruso assist at the 52:37 mark.
Charleston's Danielle Jordan scored the game's final goal at the 64:28 mark of the match.
The 49ers finished the game with a 14-10 advantage in shots. Beam led the team with three shots. While, Labuda, Kelsie Ormsby, Lindsey Beam Ozimek and Ashley Rex each recorded two shots in the game.

2005 Season
Sophomore midfielder's goal into left corner helps Buffalo down Northern Illinois, 3-2
October 9, 2005
BUFFALO, NY
- Sophomore Katie Fage (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) lifted a
direct kick from 25 yards out into the upper left corner in the second minute of
the second overtime to push the University at Buffalo women's soccer team past
Northern Illinois, 3-2, in Mid-American Conference action at UB Stadium on
Sunday.

Fage's goal, her second of the season, snapped a three-game MAC losing streak for Buffalo (4-8-1 overall, 2-4 MAC). The Bulls earned the free kick after a foul was committed by Northern Illinois (4-7-2 overall, 2-4 MAC) in the center of the field.
The Bulls held the Huskies in check throughout most of the game, allowing only 11 shots and taking 20, drawing nine corners and making only 12 fouls to Northern Illinois' 18.
In the first half, Buffalo allowed only two shots, both of which senior Anna-Lesa Calvert (Dallas, TX/Bryan Adams) made outstanding plays on. The Huskies' Angeline Impelido broke free in the 22nd minute and fired a shot towards the top of the net, but Calvert leaped, got a hand on the ball and it hit the crossbar before being knocked away by UB's defense. Erin Fahey also got a nice opportunity in the 32nd minute when she took a shot that was headed for the lower left corner, but a diving Calvert corralled the ball.
Whereas the first half was marked by defense, the second half was filled with offense. Buffalo took the lead 15 minutes into the second frame, as Fage took a shot that was saved by a diving Northern Illinois keeper, but sophomore Ashley Turner (Olean, NY/Olean) was there to fire the rebound into an open left side of the net.
The Huskies would not go quietly, however as they earned a corner in the 64th minute and after winning the corner, Jenna Clausen headed the ball into the left side of the net to tie it. Ninety seconds later, Elaine Elaidis found Alexis Terry in front of the net on an indirect kick and Terry was able to put the ball in the left side.
The Northern Illinois' lead only stood for 90 seconds, as UB went back on the offensive. In a half where they fired 10 shots, Buffalo got its biggest lift when freshman Brooke McCalla (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) was fouled inside the goal box. Awarded a penalty shot, McCalla drilled home the shot into the right corner of the net to tie the game at two.
In the first overtime, Buffalo nearly won the match in the first 30 seconds, as a cross near the Northern Illinois' goal was kicked by a Northern Illinois player off the crossbar. On the rebound, Fage kicked the ball off the crossbar, but the Bulls could not dent the twine until Fage's shot in the second overtime.
Calvert made four saves in goal for the Bulls and Carrie Dvorak stopped seven in net for the Huskies.

first victory of the season after scoring two goals including the game-winner in
Charlotte's 4-2 victory over UNC Wilmington at Transamerica Field last Sunday.

the 51st minute.
Labuda's two goal performance was her first career
multiple goal game. She became the first 49er this season
to have a multiple goal game.
She currently leads the team with the three goals and six
points. Both of these totals are career highs since she
did not score a goal or record a point last season.
