La Plant breaks Section II goal-scoring record

GREG BROWNELL

La Plant broke the Section II girls soccer career scoring record on Friday with a five-goal performance in Queensbury’s 6-1 victory over Gloversville. La Plant finished the game with 193 career goals. The previous record-holder, Nha Wright of Duanesburg, had 189.

La Plant said she was aware of the record, but was not concerned about it.

“It’s something I talked about with my family and it crossed my mind, but it wasn’t something I was going to try to force,” she said in a phone interview. “I thought, if it happens, it happens.”

There are only four players ahead of La Plant on the state career goal-scoring list. The state record is 210, set Friday by senior Molly Petrucci of City Honors in Buffalo.

Petrucci got a leg up on LaPlant last year because of her injury. La Plant might have been well over 200 goals by now had she not missed the last month of the season with a foot injury.

“It’s definitely a bummer,” she said. “I was pretty upset at the time. I’m just trying to control what I can control and do what I can this year.”

La Plant had previously set state records for goals in a game and goals in a season. She still has almost a full season to go.
